Table Value Constructor (TVC) allows to group multiple rows of data in a single DML statement.
It can be used as a part of either the VALUES clause of an INSERT INTO VALUES statement, or as a derived table in either the USING clause of the MERGE statement or the FROM clause in DML statement.
When Table Value Constructor used as a VALUES clause of an INSERT INTO VALUES statement, there is a limit of 1000 rows, while when it is used as derived table then there is no limit to the number of rows.

When null is specified in table value constructor a null value is defined for a column. NULL is not valid for an identity column.

Lets look at an example of Table Value Constructor in SQL.
First we create a sample table named ItemList as shown below.

Inserting multiple records using Table Value Constructor Lets insert the multiple records in table ItemList using Table Value Constructor.
In following T-SQL, you can see multiple records are inserted into table using Table Value constructor which seems like a traditional INSERT INTO statement except that there are multiple sets of parentheses in the VALUES clause, where each rows enclosed in the parentheses includes the individual row value expressions.

Lets verify whether the records into table are inserted or not.

You can see, records are inserted into table. TVC is very helpful when you want to insert a multiple rows of hard-coded values into a table with just one insert statement.
Using Table Value Constructor in select statement In following T-SQL, you can see each row is enclosed in a set of parentheses and the two values in each row are separated with a comma.
As a result, the TVC returns a table named Tbl which includes two columns specified as (Id, Alphabet).

You can see, It returns 4 rows for two columns Id and Alphabet.
Using Table Value Constructor in Join You can also use the table value constructor in joins
In following T-SQL, a SELECT statement defines an inner join that includes a table ItemList and a derived table ItemDesc produced by TVC.

You can see, it returns a Item details along with Item Description which comes from derived table using a TVC.
Inserting multiple rows with DEFAULT and NULL valuesÂ
Lets specify a DEFAULT and NULL when using the table value constructor to insert rows into a table.
You can see a Default is specified for column Amount in first row while a NULL is specified for column ItemCode in second rows.

Lets check the table, and you can see a default value 1000 is inserted in amount column for first record and a null value is inserted in ItemCode column for second record.
